Strong Rebids 1 by Paul Bowyer

This set of quizzes this month is all about strong rebids by the opening bidder.

In time we will look at reverses - a perennial source of confusion for many players.

For the time being we are focusing on jump rebids in the same suit.

Here are five very easy hands to start with...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 5
 A K 4
 Q 7 5
 A Q J 10 9 6

Q: 1 - After opening 1 partner responds 1. What is your response?
SouthWestNorthEast
1P1P
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. This jump rebid is dead center for the bid. You are showing a good six-card suit and something in the range of a good 15 points to about 18.

The jump rebid is not forcing over a one-level response, so North may Pass if he has dredged up a 1 response on a minimum.

No need to bid No-trumps prematurely.

Question 2

  Your Hand

 K J
 A K J 10 8 5
 K Q 9

Q: 2 - As South you open 1 and partner responds 1. What is your second bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1P1P
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 As in Q1, this is an ideal description of your hand. This rebid shows a long, strong suit and about 15-18 points.

North now has to choose whether the auction dies in a part-score (3) or advances to a game. You have shown partner your hand, now it's up to him.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A Q 10 9 8 5
 J 10 7
 A K Q
 10

Q: 3 - As South you open 1. What do you rebid after partner's 2 response?
SouthWestNorthEast
1P2P
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. Once again, your rebid proclaims a strong suit and 15-18 points (give or take a little). The difference between this example and the last two is that partner does not have the option of Passing it. After a two-level response (showing 10 points), jump rebids are forcing.

What partner does next is up to him, but Pass is not on the menu.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K J 4
 A K Q J 9 3
 A 5 2
 J

Q: 4 - You open 1 and see partner respond 1. What is your most descriptive rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1p
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. With such strength you have to take a shot at game with this hand. Your superb suit needs no support, and you have a partial Spade fit with partner.

3 would not get the job done – there are many minimum responding hands where North would Pass and you would miss an easy game.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K J 4
 A K Q J 9 3
 A 5 2
 J

Q: 5 - You open 1 and see partner respond 2. What is your most descriptive rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. This may seem perverse (see Q4 for comparison), but now it is unnecessary to jump to game.

3 is unconditionally forcing after a response at the two-level, so partner cannot leave you high and dry in a part-score.

The advantage of 3 is that it may pave the way to a slam, whereas a leap to 4 might preclude one.
